Reality is optional?

Claim: Reality is optional.

Problem: actually, reality is not optional.

Paravelum

“Reality is optional” is deceptive if it means that reality or truth can be set aside whenever they conflict with what we want to believe. We can ignore facts, deny them or tell ourselves a different story, but that does not make reality cease to be real. The phrase confuses our freedom to choose what we believe or do with a power we do not have: the power to make truth itself conform to our wishes.

The mind is meant to recognize reality, not invent it at will. We can be mistaken, but correcting a mistake means bringing our judgment back into line with what is actually the case. Realism describes reality as the measure of the human mind, rather than the mind as the maker of reality.

The phrase is also deceptive about freedom. Freedom is real and precious, but it is not simply the ability to choose any belief or action without reference to truth or the good. Freedom detached from truth can become confused and manipulated. Authentic freedom is not an escape from truth but an embrace of it. When freedom treats truth as a threat, it becomes weakened and can undermine respect for other people’s dignity.

The deception lies in the implied promise: if reality is painful or inconvenient, we can simply opt out of it. We may refuse to face the truth, but that refusal does not liberate us. It can instead leave us more vulnerable to self-deception and manipulation. Truth may challenge us, but facing it is part of living freely and responsibly.
